先日、迎賓館赤坂離宮を訪れました。

今回の目当ては、藤田嗣治が1935年（昭和10年）に銀座の洋菓子店「コロンバン」2階サロンの天井装飾として描いた、6点の油彩作品です。

2026年、藤田嗣治が生誕140周年を迎えたことを記念し、9/15まで特別に展示されています。

これらの作品は、戦時中に疎開、保管された後、1974年（昭和49年）に迎賓館へ寄贈されたそうです。

絵画全6点は、 約130号 （約1,540ｍｍ×2,110ｍｍ） という存在感のある大きさで、18世紀ルイ王朝時代のフランス風俗が描かれたすばらしいものでした。

作品そのものももちろんですが、この作品がたどってきた時間について考えると大変興味深いです。

フジタは戦時中、日本に戻り、戦争記録画を制作しました。

そして戦後、そのことをめぐって厳しい批判を受け、日本を離れることになります。

そんなフジタが、まだ戦争の影が色濃くなる前の日本で描いた作品。

その作品が現在、日本を訪れる賓客を迎える「迎賓館」という場所にある。

それを知ったとき、なんとも不思議な、そして感慨深い気持ちになりました。

画家自身は日本を離れ、二度と戻ることはありませんでした。

けれども、フジタが日本に残した作品の一部は、長い時間を越えて、今もここに残っています。

作品が90年以上の時間を旅してきたことを思うと、絵を見るということが、単に「描かれたものを見る」だけではないように感じます。

その作品がどこで生まれ、誰に愛され、どんな時代を通り、そしてなぜ今ここにあるのか。

そんなことまで考えながら作品を見ると、また違ったものが見えてくる気がします。

ちなみに、迎賓館の内部は撮影禁止のため、今回は作品の写真はありません。

代わりに、迎賓館の美しい建物と門の写真を。

その場所に立って、フジタの6点の作品がここにあることを知るだけでも、特別な時間となりました。

Seeing Foujita’s Six Ceiling Paintings

— From Ginza Colombin to the State Guest House

Visit to the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace, in Tokyo.

The highlight was seeing six oil paintings by Tsuguharu Foujita, created in 1935 (Showa 10) as ceiling decorations for the second-floor salon of Colombin, a well-known Western-style confectionery shop in Ginza.

In 2026, to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Tsuguharu Foujita’s birth, these works are being specially displayed until September 15.

The six paintings were evacuated and kept in storage during the war, and were later donated to the State Guest House in 1974 (Showa 49).

All six paintings are impressive in scale, each measuring approximately 130 Japanese-size painting boards (about 1,540 × 2,110 mm). They depict scenes of French life during the 18th century, in the style of the French court under the Bourbon monarchy, and are truly remarkable works.

Of course, the paintings themselves are fascinating, but what makes them especially intriguing is the long journey they have taken through history.

During the war, Foujita returned to Japan and produced paintings depicting the war.

After the war, he faced severe criticism over his involvement in war-related art and eventually left Japan.

It is deeply moving to consider that these works were created by Foujita in Japan before the Second World War, and that they are now housed in the State Guest House, a place where distinguished guests from around the world are welcomed.

Knowing this creates a curious mixture of emotions—something unexpected, and at the same time deeply moving.

Foujita himself left Japan and never returned.

Yet some of the works he left behind in Japan have survived the passage of time and remain here today.

When considering how these paintings have traveled through more than 90 years of history, looking at a work of art begins to feel like more than simply seeing what has been painted.

Where was the work created? Who appreciated it? What kind of times did it pass through? And why has it come to be here today?

Thinking about these questions while looking at a work can reveal something entirely different.

Unfortunately, photography is not permitted inside the State Guest House, so there are no photographs of the paintings to share here.

Instead, photographs of the beautiful building and its gates have been included.

Simply standing there, knowing that Foujita’s six paintings are preserved in this place, made the visit feel like a particularly special moment.
