ユトリロが生涯繰り返した代表的なテーマ「ムーラン・ド・ラ・ギャレット」。

パリのモンマルトルにあった大衆的なダンスホールです。 この場所は、労働者階級が集まる社交場として栄え、印象派の画家たちもよく描いています。

ユトリロはモンマルトルで生まれ育ち、この地で芸術家として活躍し、貧困・友情・酒が混ざった青春時代を送りました。

興味深いのは、この絵が彼の晩年1950年に、ル・ヴェジネというパリ西郊外の住宅地ル・ヴェジネで描かれたことです。健康悪化により外出がままらなくなっていたユトリロが、ル・ヴェジネにいながら、若い頃のモンマルトルを思い出して描いているように思われます。

作品上部には、美味しいカルヴァドス酒を飲んだ思い出に、と友人へのため書きが見られます。晩年のユトリロが、自身が愛したモンマルトルを心の中から呼び戻し、友人との楽しい酒の記憶に添えて贈った一枚です。

The Moulin de la Galette, one of Maurice Utrillo’s most recurring and emblematic subjects, was a popular dance hall located in Montmartre, Paris. The site flourished as a lively social gathering place for the working class and was frequently depicted by Impressionist painters.

Utrillo was born and raised in Montmartre, where he developed his career as an artist and spent his youth surrounded by poverty, friendship, and the culture of café life and drink.

What makes this work particularly interesting is that it was executed in 1950, during the artist’s late period, in Le Vésinet, a quiet residential suburb west of Paris. As declining health increasingly limited his mobility, Utrillo appears to have painted this scene from memory, recalling the Montmartre of his younger years while living away from it.

An inscription at the top of the sheet dedicates the work to a friend “in memory of a fine Calvados,” suggesting a shared moment of conviviality. The drawing can thus be understood as a personal gift, in which the aging artist revisits the Montmartre he loved, offering it alongside the warm memory of time spent together over a drink.
