《ダフニスとクロエ》は、約10年の歳月をかけて制作されたシャガールの代表的な挿画本で、42点のリトグラフによって古代ギリシアの恋物語を描いた作品です。

原作は3世紀頃の作家ロンゴスによる牧歌的な小説で、自然の中で育った若い二人が愛に目覚め成長していく姿が語られます。

出版は20世紀を代表する出版者テリアードが手がけ、パリのムルロー工房の卓越した技術によって制作されました。テリアードはギリシアのレスボス島出身で、この物語の舞台が自らの故郷であったこともあり、親交のあったシャガールに挿絵制作を依頼しました。

シャガールは制作にあたりギリシアを旅し、その光や色彩から大きなインスピレーションを得ています。

愛と色彩に満ちたこの作品は、シャガールの版画芸術の最高傑作の一つとされています。


Daphnis and Chloé is one of Chagall’s most celebrated illustrated books, created over a period of nearly ten years. Through 42 colour lithographs, the artist brings to life the ancient Greek love story of two young shepherds.

The original text, written around the 3rd century by the author Longus, is a pastoral novel that tells the story of two children abandoned in infancy who grow up together in harmony with nature and gradually awaken to love.

The book was published by the influential 20th-century publisher Tériade and printed at the renowned Atelier Mourlot in Paris. Tériade, who was born on the Greek island of Lesbos—the setting of the story—invited his friend Marc Chagall to illustrate the novel.

In preparation for the project, Chagall travelled to Greece, where the light and colours of the landscape provided him with profound inspiration.

Rich in love, poetry, and colour, Daphnis and Chloé is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of Chagall’s graphic art.
